Read about the team behind our new website
A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE MICROSOFT TEAM
Without them we wouldn’t have our lovely new website, Microsoft funded it and offered university interns and apprentices a unique opportunity to create it and get involved in a project that would have a social impact.
Its design and content have also been shaped by female students from a variety of schools.
The project was managed by Ella Cockerell a Modern Muse sponsor at Microsoft.
THIS IS WHAT SHE TOLD US
“I pulled together a team of interns, set the strategy and worked with them to create the new website. I met and built relationships with an amazing group of young women and men, our interns are so talented and really are the heroes that made this happen.

When you start a project like this it’s important to remember:
IT’S OK NOT TO KNOW IT ALL! AND YOU PROBABLY NEVER WILL 😉
During this project, I learnt a lot about developing a website, honed my project management skills and managed to overcome a few challenges along the way.
I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I WANTED TO DO WHEN I WAS AT SCHOOL
I didn’t have role models when I was younger, and I fell into tech by accident but have never looked back. That’s why it’s amazing to be able to inspire a group of young women at scale from one central place. I love that the new website makes it easy for me to share information on my social feed quickly and via my phone – enabling me to make updates on the run.
TECH IS SUCH AN EXCITING PLACE TO BE RIGHT NOW
As an industry we can change the world and my advice to girls would be to broaden your mind about tech, think beyond the standard PCs you use at school to other applications of technology you interact with. From Minecraft or Fortnite to Netflix, Snapchat, Instagram, even make up!
IT’S ALL TECH BUT YOU MIGHT NOT THINK ABOUT IT THAT WAY TODAY
Changing that mindset will mean you see how ingrained technology already is in your life. You literally can’t live without it.”
Ellen Murley is one of the interns who volunteered to be on the team. She took the lead in developing the website and is now back at Loughborough University studying for her degree in BSc Information Management and Business. Ellen is also a Modern Muse Youth Ambassador Board Member.
Her career goal is to turn her clothing company into her day job, and employ a team of creative, passionate people who are totally behind the company mission to spread good vibes and girl power!
THIS IS WHAT SHE TOLD US
“During my internship at Microsoft, I felt it was important to get involved in projects that would have a social impact. The opportunity to get involved in Modern Muse arose, and I chose to take on the role of redesigning their website. When I put myself forward, I didn’t realise how involved I would become.
THE WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY INTERNSHIP
I’ve developed key project management skills, learned how to work with stakeholders and grown my confidence along the way!
MY MISSION WAS TO CREATE AN AMAZING PLATFORM TO INSPIRE GIRLS AND GIVE THEM ACCESS TO FEMALE ROLE MODELS
I love the clear layout of the profiles, and how the search function enables users to filter Muses by company, sector and so on very easily. It’s much more intuitive than the old website.”
Andrew Mathews also a university intern, worked closely with Ellen to develop the website.
THIS IS WHAT HE TOLD US
“I’m super glad to have been a part of such an awesome organisation and have contributed to their ongoing success, whilst getting some exposure to developing websites in the real world. I’d love to pursue a career as a developer, possibly a web developer – working with Modern Muse has been immensely helpful in building my experience.”
A new team are now managing the site and have supported us to launch it – so a big thanks to them too.
