Recruiting, training and booking (mainly students) to work as waiting staff and bar tenders at one off events - think VIP areas as horse racing, weddings, parties, launch events! This role was quite varied, hectic and full on. I got the chance to work at some celebrity weddings, fashion week parties and much more.
Bamboo Event Production
From staffing events to producing them! Bamboo was all about experiential brand events for some of our best know products. I planned and ran events for Veuve Cliquot, Hennessey and Belvedere to name a few! My job was to plan the events around the requirements of the client and then deliver the brand experience to consumers, special guests and employees. From transforming a space in the New York Public Library to sourcing taxidermy for a Victorian inspired racing party!
Travel to Australia
After a few years of work I decided to take some time out to visit Australia. In my time away from London I got the opportunity to do a little travelling in Oz! I had the chance to meet up with friends I had made whilst working in London, visiting mountains, beaches and of course taking in all that Australia has to offer.
On my return from Australia I joined a start-up company in the city. I was initially responsible for recruiting new people and quickly grew into a leading our induction training as we were growing so fast! I then found a real passion for learning and development and began studying for my CIPD qualification in L&D practice. I was promoted to the role of L&D Consultant and I worked on learning projects for our team in the UK, Ireland, Denmark and India.
Fuller, Smith and Turner
After two crazy years at Groupon I decided to mix things up a bit, I went from start-up to a company nearly 200 years old! My role at Fuller's was all about training and during my time there I went from working as a trainer delivering classroom style learning to leading their learning technology team, it was still learning and development just through phone and laptops rather than in a classroom. As part of my learning tech role I led the team in implementing a learning and communications platform for 5,000 staff across 400 locations. This meant employees had access to learning on the go, connections to each other and a platform to share their thoughts and ideas.
In my role at the British Retail Consortium I am leading a project to bring the future of retail to those making career decisions. My job is to help educate people to see a career in retail as more than just 'working in a shop'. Through short videos we are showcasing some of the interesting careers in retail that people might not have thought of. I get to work with some of the biggest retailers in the UK, like Amazon, ASOS, Sainsbury's and Superdrug. My job is find out about all the interesting people they have working for them, interview them and then share their video stories via the Rethink Retail website I have been building with our designer! I also get to work on developing retail apprenticeships and and developing our whole learning offer.
My favourite job is my current one! I get to do all the things I love, meeting new people, building beautiful things using technology, educating and training people and most importantly helping people with their future. Every day is different and I am learning new skills with each step of the journey!
My name is Kate and I have been working in Learning and Development for 8 years. Learning and Development teams look after all aspects of employee learning and training for a business of organisation and I have been lucky enough to work with some really great people over the last 8 years.
I didn't start in L&D though, after finishing university I actually started my career in events. After a few years in industry I decided to take some time out to work out what I wanted to do next and having concluded that I liked working with people across different teams, that I was driven by others succeeding with my support and generally being pretty passionate about learning I decided to have a go at this L&D thing. I am pleased to say I haven't looked back!
Throughout my time working in L&D I have worked as part of internal teams and am now trying my hand at working to develop a consumer learning platform. Whilst it's quite challenging doing something so different, it's also a lot of fun and I am learning lots.

I loved drama and media studies at school, but I was a total bookworm so English was my choice for Uni! PE was my least favourite subject, but as I found out once I left school, it's just because I prefer to exercise on my own
Desire to keep learning, communication both written and verbal, project management, presentations and public speaking, website/learning platform development and management
My CIPD really kicked off my workplace learning, from there I completed my project management qualification and whilst I am not doing any formal learning now I am surrounding myself with people who help me grow. I am part of quite a few learning networks that meet in person but also collaborate online. Being keen to know more and ask questions makes sure I keep developing my skills.
I really wanted to be a journalist, I think that's because I like sharing information with people and starting conversations. Ina roundabout kind of way that's exactly what I do now!
I would have taken a bit of time out before or just after university to travel, this would have given me some space to really think about what my next steps were going to be.
