2 year traineeship, where I rotated through different disciplines and worked different people within the firm. Towards the end of the 2 years I was able to secure a permanent role post qualification. Hard work pays off.
Shepherd & Wedderburn Solicitor
I was appointed to a permanent position in the commercial team, within the corporate department. I continued working on a project that I had been working on for the last 6 months of my training. The projected involved the next steps of opening up the Scottish Electricity Market to competition. We worked long hours, in a great team, we learnt a lot and had a lot of fun along the way. I really took on board the importance of professionalism in your work and behaviours.
colt telecommunications ltd Legal Advisor / Head of Legal Northern Region
The move in house was an eye opener for me, in terms of the types of jobs available and the variation in skills and personality types. Initially I supported the procurement team on legal contracts but quickly took on further responsibility and ultimately was appointed as Head of Legal for the Northern Region. I built my own direct team from scratch, and had a baptism by fire in learning to manage. It was a steep learning curve and an enormous amount of fun.
Fisher Scientific / European Counsel
I was the first lawyer in Europe for the highly acquisitive Fisher, and provided legal support across divisions and service lines. The job involved a significant amount of travel, and a long commute for me, I saw a lot of Europe! I learnt the importance of relationships and influencing the strategic decision makers at the right time in the process, to ensure you get the right legal and compliance result as well as the right commercial result.
Aegis Defence Services (latterly GardaWorld post acquisition)
Initially as General Counsel and latterly as a member of strategic leadership team with responsibility for Legal, HR, operational Compliance & Assurance, Health & Safety and Welfare and Risk. This was a very challenging role, and I learnt how to really manage risk in a way that enable business.
I have taken some time out of full time work, have spent more time with family and friends, picked up french classes (again - I strive to be conversational!) and started working with two charities, including Modern Muse.
I provide legal support to Adhibeo and also offer consultancy services to a small portfolio of clients and aim to work 2-3 days a week, while continuing to support charities and my personal development.
colt telecom - the challenge and Adrenalin of everything being so knew, and the voice inside wondering “why are they asking me”, together with the calibre of some of the people I worked with, the friendships made and the pace of change in the company was exhilarating - it was my professional “growing up”.

Drama, English Language, English Literature, French, History, Latin, Mathematics, Politics, Economics, General studies
I liked Economics, History and Politics, because I was interested in the World and making sense of what was happening in it - but in truth I think my love of those subjects was nurtured because of how good my teachers were.
